Description
The Surly Midnight Special is a road-plus all-rounder for riders who like their tarmac scruffy. It happily trundles between cafe rides, the rougher edges of the lane network and the occasional gravel detour, and it does it all on a steel frame that feels properly planted under load.
Frame & ride
Frame and fork are Surly’s own 4130 CroMoly, double-butted on the frame and ED-coated for corrosion resistance, with TIG-welded construction throughout. Modern road touches like flat-mount disc tabs, 12mm thru-axles front and rear and a 44mm head tube keep the chassis compatible with current parts, while clearance for 650b x 60mm or 700c x 42mm rubber (650b x 50mm or 700c x 38mm with mudguards) gives you plenty of room to experiment with how plump you want the tyres.
This 650b build comes set up with high-volume Schwalbe G-One Speed 650x50c tyres on Halo Vapour MT wheels, so cracked tarmac, broken chip-seal and dry farm tracks all feel less like an interruption and more like part of the route. Shifting is SRAM Apex Hydro 1x with a SRAM Rival 1x long-cage rear derailleur, a 42T Rival 1x crank and a SRAM PG1130 11-42 11-speed cassette, a generous range for a properly mixed-surface bike. Braking is SRAM Apex Hydro hydraulic disc, with a Genetic finishing kit handling bar, stem, post, saddle and bar tape.
