Description
If you’d rather keep your shifting mechanical and your maintenance simple, the Shimano-equipped On-One Free Ranger is the version of this carbon all-rounder built for you. It carries the same lightweight frameset and adventure-friendly geometry as its wireless siblings, but pairs them with the proven, gravel-specific Shimano GRX RX820 drivetrain.
Frame & ride
The full carbon frame is shaped to feel quick on tarmac transitions yet stable when the surface degrades into broken lanes, farm tracks or singletrack. Progressive geometry gives a confident front end and predictable handling over loose corners, while UDH compatibility keeps the rear end open to current and future direct-mount drivetrain standards. Tyre clearance is generous at 48mm on 700c, and the Free Ranger’s pickled-in mounts make it just as comfortable carrying a frame bag and bar roll as it is stripped back for chasing Strava segments.
For long days off-grid, the bottle, luggage and mudguard fittings on frame and fork remove the usual bikepacking faff. Token’s G23HD wheelset keeps the rotational weight in check while remaining tough enough for rougher surfaces, and the quoted weight of around 9.25kg in size Medium puts the build on the lighter side of mid-priced gravel. The GRX RX820 group is one of the more refined gravel-specific drivetrains around: dedicated brake-lever ergonomics for hoods riding on rough surfaces, a clutch rear derailleur that keeps the chain quiet on chatter and a wide cassette that’s there when the gradient kicks. Combined with the carbon frame’s natural damping, it makes for a bike that feels sorted from the first ride.
